SALA 1 - PAU CASALS

What if we reconstruct Beethoven’s music from the perspective of the 21st century? The admiration of John Adams for the way in which Igor Stravinsky revisited 18th-century music to compose the ballet Pulcinella was the initial impetus for Absolute Jest, for string quartet and orchestra. Despite the two centuries that separate them, John Adams feels close to Beethoven: the use of ecstatic energy and the ability to make expressive musical structures from minimal materials is common to both composers. Adams uses fragments of Beethoven’s works to craft them into a whole new musical fabric. The scherzos of the Quartets op. 131 and 135, as well as fragments of the Ninth Symphony or the Waldstein Sonata offer up breathtaking music that bears the unmistakable stamp of John Adams.

TEMPORADA DE CONCERTS BMB 2021/22

SALA 1 - PAU CASALS

Sorcery and mystery, gypsies murmuring spells, and dancing around the fire. El amor brujo is a tale of passion that goes beyond the living world into the afterlife. The main protagonists of this ballet pantomime are Candelas and Carmelo, plus a former lover of Candelas whose ghost torments her. Incantations, witchcraft and traditional Andalusian music all combine to make this a particularly appealing work. The "Danza ritual del fuego" ("Ritual fire dance") or "Canción del fuego fatuo" ("Song of the will-o'-the-wisp") have become landmarks in 20th century music.

Frei aber froh (Free but happy) was one of Johannes Brahms’ favourite maxims. The acronym formed by the three words forms the central motif of Symphony no. 3, a work imbued with a heroic spirit and a formal and emotional density that distinguishes it from the author's other symphonies. Robert Schumann’s influence is also present in a symphony that constitutes one of the greatest contributions in Brahms’ mature creative phase to the orchestral repertoire.

Symphonie Fantastique's music recounts the tale of an obsessively infatuated young artist. Spellbound by a woman, he raises her to the heights of a perfect being, succumbing to unavoidable explosions of joy, outbursts of fury and jealousy, and unstoppable waves of passions. As the symphonic poem advances, the artist's fixed notion of his beloved is reflected by a musical leitmotif that is heard repeatedly in all the movements: in the uproar of a party, in a rural scene, during a terrible opium-induced nightmare and, finally, on a grotesque Saturday night.

The ballet music for Cinderella was one of the last works composed by Sergei Prokofiev with the approval of the Soviet authorities, shortly before he fell into a tragic ostracism. The author draws on the tale of Cinderella to pay homage to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the undisputed mainstay of Russian ballet music. The Suites compile different sections of the ballet and vividly portray various scenes from the heroine’s tale, with an unmistakable orchestral brilliance that masterfully illustrates a universal story about unjust oppression and triumphant rescue.

Käthchen, the daughter of a blacksmith from Heilbronn, and Kunigunde, Baroness of Thurneck, fight to win the heart of Count von Strahl. Love, hate and revenge succeed one another in a drama that takes place in the Middle Ages, which Heinrich von Kleist premiered in Vienna in 1810. Composer Bert Appermont transformed the tale into an original work for symphony band, with extraordinary skill in conveying the protagonists' emotional moods through music. The score includes a melody that is very popular in Catalonia: the 16th century pavane Belle qui tiens ma vie by Thoinot Arbeau.

The symphony was premiered under the baton of the composer himself in London in 1885.

George Gershwin premiered An American in Paris in New York's Carnegie Hall in 1928. He had just turned thirty and he was already very well known for his Broadway premiers and, above all, for the famous Rhapsody in Blue. A generation later, the legendary Gene Kelly and actress Leslie Caron revived its popularity by bringing the music to the cinema screen. The 1951 film, directed by Vincent Minelli, has imprinted images in our minds that are intrinsically linked to the melodies of the young musician who one day reached the City of Lights and was so fascinated by its Bohemian cultural life.

Bach’s music remained in relative oblivion for almost nearly eighty years. The fact that it has been able to be revered as one of the pillars of Western culture is, in large part, due to the revival work done by Felix Mendelssohn during the 1930s. Despite the legends describing this discovery as a fortuitous coincidence, Mendelssohn became acquainted with the music of the Bach family during his training at the Singakademie in Berlin, an entity focused on promoting the German sacred choral repertoire. In fact, the works of Mendelssohn’s youth — such as his chamber symphonies — owe much to the exuberant style of C.P.E. Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach’s second son. A stellar moment in the history of music is the rediscovery of the Passion According to St. Matthew under the baton of a young Felix Mendelssohn, in February 1829.

In the same way as works like Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, Arnold Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder (Songs of Gurre), or Gustav Mahler’s Symphonies, The Poem of Ecstasy, by Alexander Scriabin, is a cornerstone of the radical musical transformation that took place during the early 20th century.
Scriabin's music feeds off a mystical and theosophical conception of the musical act, intimately linked to a correlation between sonic space, light and colour. While it is in piano music that the composer reaches the highest levels of abstraction, the five symphonic works that complete his oeuvre are foundational monuments of modern symphonic language. The Poem of Ecstasy is a song of praise to liberated action and energy, to the cosmos, to spirit and to eternal creation, to consciousness, and to ecstatic time.

The programme for this concert focuses on music of Italian influences. Two highpoints are Capriccio, a free fantasy written by New Zealand composer Janssen, one of today's leading composers for band, and Fantasy Variations by Barnes. According to the latter, this piece on the theme of Paganini's famous Caprice No. 24 is a work "appropriate for all members of the public[...]full of vitality, drama and even a touch of humour".

More than a hundred years separate Jean Sibelius’ Symphony no. 2 from Liguria by the Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi, but both works emerge from the fascination with Italy of their composers. In the case of the latter, the impulse to compose the piece arises from the impression generated by the route of different paths near the Ligurian Sea that connect the small fishing villages nestled among the rocky cliffs.

How does one write a piece of music in celebration of life on earth? What texts should it be based on? When John Rutter composed The Gift of Life in 2015, he only found one historical reference that had any connection with his idea: The Creation by Haydn. As a result, with substantial freedom of form and content, he decided to divide the score into six movements, half based on sacred texts and the other half on his own verses.

The Basque singer and actress Miren de Miguel presents a special New Year’s concert, an all-round show with staging, monologues, visual effects and eye-catching, varying costumes. With musical skill, an energetic voice and a touch of humour, De Miguel will perform the arias associated with some of the best-known protagonists of Italian opera, ranging from Cleopatra in the opera Giulio Cesare or Violetta Valery in La Traviata to Carmen or Madame Butterfly. All these female literary characters are as immortal as their personal tragedies. The Barcelona Symphony Band will be accompanying the soprano and performing some instrumental fragments, like "Elsa's procession" from Lohengrin by Wagner or the prelude to the second act of Un ballo in maschera (Masked Ball) by Verdi.

Original works for band have a special sound all of their own and they make a particularly outstanding impact if they were written by great musicians, like Shostakovich or Schoenberg. The Barcelona Symphony Band will perform the second Suite for Variety Orchestra by the Russian composer. This includes the famous waltz that Kubrick featured in the film Eyes Wide Shut. They will also play Schoenberg's Theme and Variations, written when the composer had settled in the United States. Schoenberg's publisher commissioned him with a work for young music students and that is why it has a moving, gentle quality. Among the seven variations, it includes a nostalgic tribute to Vienna in the form of a waltz.

From his refuge on the shores of Lake Atter, Mahler composed a significant part of his work, a vision that continues to delve into a complex, contradictory, wide and infinite continent about to burst open at the turn of the 20th century. “What Love Tells Me” is the last movement that makes up the Third Symphony, a colossal work composed in the late 19th century and a wonderfully fresh sound that, with the process of human redemption as its bedrock, feeds on images from classical mythology and nature to erect a solemn hymn to hope.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov evokes the universe of the collection of tales The Thousand and One Nights in Scheherazade, music that falls partway between a programmatic symphony and a symphonic poem. Without confining himself to a background text that limits the possibilities of interpretation, Rimsky-Korsakov resorts to the impression caused by Scheherazade’s nocturnal narratives on Sultan Shahriar to compose a masterpiece of orchestration and one of the most famous pieces of Russian music. Transparent and colourful, this music recreates a fanciful and enchanting Oriental worldview.

Bernat Vivancos presents a world premiere, and Asier Polo–one of today's finest cellists–performs Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto, two of the highpoints of this programme. Organis Aurea are verses from Goigs a Nostra Dona by Joan Brudieu, one of Catalonia's most outstanding 16th century composers. Vivanco's idea is to equate the symphony band with an organ, based on the similarity in how sound is produced by the band's instruments and by the pipes of the 'king of sacred music'.

Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony no. 49, known as La passione, is one of the most representative works of the composer’s Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) period, characterised by intense and vigorous expressiveness. The symphony has a structure that follows the model of the Baroque sonata da chiesa, four movements in the same key headed by a slow time signature with a bleak and elegiac character.

In 1876, Modest Tchaikovsky urged his brother to compose a score based on Shakespeare's Hamlet, a drama that reminds us what is most important in human life. It seemed like a good idea to Pyotr Ilyich, but he just jotted down a few draft ideas. Years later, Duchess Pavlovna planned a charity gala at the Mariinsky Theatre at which the third act of Hamlet would be performed, and actor Lucien Guitry asked the composer to write some music for the occasion. The gala was cancelled, but Tchaikovsky still wrote Fantasy Overture, which was performed in November 1888. Reflecting Hamlet by Fioravanti is a contemporary vision of this classic.

Eric Lu's debut with the OBC as part of the Festival Emergents presents the Piano Concerto op. 54 by Robert Schumann. This work constitutes a transcendent change in the conception of the concert for solo instrument and orchestra throughout the 19th century: Schumann changes the conception of the concerto understood as a pretext for the virtuoso exhibition of the soloist to a total and full integration between soloist and the orchestra, in the construction of a symphony with a soloist.

Since this tragedy by Shakespeare was first written, Romeo and Juliet's impossible love has continued to be a quintessential artistic theme. Written in 1597, it is never out of date. When Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned with a ballet on the theme, he thought about giving it a happy ending; an idea that he finally rejected so as to remain true to the original. Premiered in Brno in 1938 and Leningrad in 1940, the ballet has become one of the major Soviet works featured in international repertoires. Between 1936 and 1937, the two suites were immediately scheduled to be performed throughout the world, even before the ballet.

Pep Gimeno “Botifarra” grew up in Vall d'Albaida listening to the songs of his grandparents, in particular those of uela Otilia de Benicàssim, and, at a very young age, he became interested in oral traditions. With the group Al Tall as his reference, in a context in which use of the Valencian language and other liberties were both being regained, Botifarra began to build an artistic career based on the revival of traditional local music. In recognition of his efforts, he was awarded the Medal for Cultural Merit by the Valencia Regional Government and Medal of Honour by the Valencia Ministry for Culture.

Händel is one of the great opera composers of all time, with a perfect command of dynamism and theatrical rhythm (as well as his operas, his oratorios are another clear example of this). Amadigi di Gaula is based on the Spanish chivalric novel of the same name and it was a huge success from the moment it was premiered. On the one hand, it features two lovers (Princess Oriana and the hero Amadigi) and, on the other, two characters consumed with envy (Melissa and Dardano). To give a brief summary, the two lovers find themselves subjected to a rollercoaster of passions and torments until, finally, they discover the joys of requited love. The opera has a superb cast and accompanying musicians, with Núria Rial and Xavier Sabata, Sabina Puértolas and Katarina Bradić, Rafael Quirant and Vespres d'Arnadí, and conductor Dani Espasa.

An extraordinary pianist, conductor and composer, his music draws directly from the most genuinely romantic universe of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Frédéric Chopin, in a sublimation of form in the service of spontaneity and expression. Under the influence of the piano concertos of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Frédéric Chopin and Edvard Grieg, and with the intention of demonstrating an extraordinary technical brilliance within the reach of the composer’s interpretive abilities, the Piano Concerto no. 1 is one of his prime works. Dissatisfied with his effort — a characteristic of a composer who was just beginning to write — he completely revised it in 1917 and in doing so achieved the form in which it is performed today.

Richard Strauss draws on the misadventures of Don Quixote to compose a symphonic poem in the form of variations for cello, viola and orchestra. The composer uses the cello as a representation of Don Quixote, while the viola (and occasionally the bass clarinet and tuba) expresses the character of Sancho Panza. Strauss was a composer fascinated by the figure of a hero and his musical embodiment from philosophical and literary references, as evidenced by works such as Thus Spoke Zarathustra, A Hero’s Life or Don Quixote. The composer’s identification with the hero is a constant throughout his production, and the processes of transformation and victorious overcoming are the structural background to much of his music. To achieve this synthesis with the Nietzschean superman, Strauss embraces every orchestral resource imaginable to broaden the threshold of what is possible and generate an instrument in the service of mankind’s unstoppable progress.

The cantata The Plague is based on the novel of the same name by Albert Camus, an author with whom Robert Gerhard always showed a great affinity. In the words of the composer, “The Plague is a fable and, as in all fables, animals stand in for humans. This is not a tale of rats, but of humans. It is a tale of our time. However, it cannot be a story with a victorious ending, but rather an eternal defeat.” With music of extraordinary intensity and with the same absolute validity and topicality as the novel by Camus, The Plague is one of the composer’s greatest works, the synthesis of the musical and human journey throughout a whole life by the most internationally-renowned Catalan composer.

In 1927, the Barcelona Symphony Band travelled to Frankfurt to take part in the International Music Exhibition, inaugurated on 11 June. Conducted by Joan Lamote de Grignon, it performed eight concerts, featuring a total of 26 different works, mostly by Catalan and Spanish composers. At the last concert, the well-known composer and orchestral conductor, Richard Strauss, led the band in a performance of his symphonic poem Don Juan, a work transcribed by Lamote de Grignon for the occasion. That same version, revised by José R. Pascual-Vilaplana, is the star feature of this concert.

Brahms waited until he reached full creative maturity to begin his four symphonies, true monuments of 19th-century symphonic language. Symphony no. 4, 1885, is the composer’s farewell to the symphonic genre and the culmination of a tradition begun by Haydn and Beethoven. The third major descending interval that heads the initial movement becomes a structural and motivic foundation throughout the piece, while the final movement takes the model of the Baroque chaconnes, with a descending ostinato taken from Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantata 150 and elaborated along successive variations until climaxing in an ending soaked in the initial tragic pathos.

Clarinettist Joan Estellés and bassoon-player Daniel Ortuño will perform the solos of the Duett-Concertino by Richard Strauss. The idea of turning the spotlight on certain members of the Barcelona Symphony Band, put into practice at this concert and previous ones, is a very interesting one. This work by Strauss, in brilliant, crystalline, neo-Classical style, is one of the last that he composed. The German composer wrote to his publisher, joking that the last movement was a dance between a princess and a grotesque creature that finally turned into a prince.

The evocation of Spanish imaginary from afar, by Robert Gerhard, and the transformation of French symphonic language in the nineteenth century are the main features of this programme. Gerhard’s Dances from Don Quixote is a suite in three parts, drawn from the ballet Don Quixote which the composer wrote in 1940 after going into exile in England because of the Spanish Civil War. On this occasion, as a way of introducing himself to the English musical establishment, Gerhard turned to Cervantes’ immortal classic, synthesising figures from the Spanish tradition with a very personal use of the twelve-tone technique. The characters are not portrayed via leitmotifs or recurring themes but through distinctive serialist sequences.

Who has not heard the sardana - En el Vallespir, sung by Francina and the children's choir in the zarzuela Cançó d’amor i de guerra and also performed by singers as wide-ranging as Montserrat Caballé and Salomé? And what about Pirineu, tes blanques comes, the earnest, moving aria by Eloi and the choir of soldiers that became so popular over the course of a century? The zarzuela by Martínez Valls, with a libretto by Lluís Capdevila and Víctor Mora, has become an emblematic work, and some fragments have gone beyond the confines of theatres to become symbols of Catalan music.

LA GRANDE CHAPELLE - FESTIVAL LLUMS D'ANTIGA

*BASÍLICA SANTA MARIA DEL PI

Wednesday, 20/04/2022 19:00

The 16th and 17th centuries marked a highpoint in music in the Iberian Peninsula during the period of religious polyphony. This concert by La Grande Chapelle, conducted by Albert Recasens, features work by four of the finest exponents of this kind of music (which this splendid ensemble spearheads). They are the immortal Tomás Luis de Victoria and his contemporaries Alonso Lobo (a disciple of Francisco Guerrero, another leading name in Hispanic polyphony), Pedro Riumonte (who travelled from his home town of Zaragoza to Brussels, where he settled and became a kapellmeister) and the Portuguese composer Manuel Cardoso. Although this is a style of music that owes much to Palestrina's powerful influences, its melancholic laments float mystically in the air, remaining on high, like a waft of incense or something that has issued forth from the strange colours and shapes of an El Greco painting.

Tears, laments and the sounds of insanity are brought to us by Jordi Savall and some of his most loyal, celebrated musicians–all leading references in their chosen instruments–, with Xavier Díaz-Latorre on the guitar and theorbo, Andrew Lawrence King on the baroque harp and Pedro Esteban as percussionist. The audience will revel in this display of creativity and inventiveness in music conceived as a living, open phenomenon, inextricably linked to popular music. The concert will also introduce the audience to different traditions and approaches to the art of variation and improvisation. It focuses on the period from the 16th to the 18th centuries, ranging from the famous John Dowland and his English backdrops through Elizabethan Anthony Holborne or Scottish soldier-musician Tobias Hume to our own regions, the Kingdoms of Naples and Spain, and the baroque France and Germany of the great viol player, Marin Marais, and Johan Jakob Froberger, whose work stands out for its fascinating stylistic opulence.

*CAPELLA SANTA ÀGATA

Tuesday, 26/04/2022 19:00

Soprano Emmanuelle de Negri and Le Consort, conducted by promising young harpsichordist Justin Taylor, invite us to enjoy the delicate, poetic world of French baroque cantatas, a genre that reached its highpoint in the 18th century. The programme is made up of several highly compact pieces, some lasting for just a few minutes. Despite this, they have a powerful dramatic force, expressing sentiments like love, heartbreak, tenderness, vengeance, happiness or tragedy, always overlaid by a sweet, refined, typically French sense of melancholy. In addition to the music of two great names in chamber music, Louis-Nicolas Clérambault and Michel Pignolet de Montéclair, we will also be able to hear the far less well-known music of Louis-Antoine Lefebvre (whose exquisite opening aria of the "cantatille" Les regrets was chosen for the title of this programme) and the instrumental music of Jean-François Dandrieu.

El amor brujo (The bewitched love), by Manuel de Falla, is one of the most important works in the Spanish repertoire, with the famous Danza ritual del fuego (Ritual fire dance) and Canción del fuego fatuo (Song of wildfire). Initially conceived as an Andalusian pantomime for chamber ensemble and solo female singer, or cantaora — commissioned by the dancer, or bailaora, Pastora Imperio — and later transformed into a ballet in symphonic version, it tells the story of the torment of the gypsy Candelas by the ghost of her former lover.

Death is a floating and ominous presence in Schubert’s work. His lied Das Tod und der Mädchen (Death and the Maiden) takes a poem by the German Matthias Claudius based on a quite common theme in European art since the Renaissance: the personified image of death attacking, kidnapping, or threatening a young virginal-looking maiden. The main theme of this song was the seed material for one of the Viennese composer’s best-known string quartets. Schubert returned in 1820 to composing quartets, a genre he had not dedicated time to in many years, and the results were extraordinary.

Thursday, 28/04/2022 19:00

The collection of madrigals written by controversial Italian composer Carlo Gesualdo features some of the most fascinating examples of this genre and perhaps the only ones on a par with those of Claudio Monteverdi. To bring to life each of the sentiments expressed in the poems, the composer boldly resorted to numerous types of modulation (the more unusual and experimental, the better), combined with the roughest, bitterest chromaticism and the most striking, captivating dissonance. We will listen to a selection from the Fifth and Sixth Book, both of which were written during the final years of his life and the second of which was published posthumously. In addition to this selection from the Prince of Venosa's two books, works will be played by Michael Finnissy, a fellow countryman of Exaudi, and by Catalan composer Bernat Vivancos, with his six-voice motet Nigra es, pulchra sum. Interwoven in the latter are the texts Nigra sum and Pulchra es from the Song of Songs, using different compositional and vocal techniques, such as non-tempered scales and overtone singing.

*MONESTIR DE SANT PAU

Sunday, 1/05/2022 19:00

The star features of this programme are the refined, sensual Duetti da camera for soprano and contralto by multifaceted composer Agostino Steffani (also a singer, diplomat, vicar and even bishop). These duets are rather like profane cantatas, with a rich use of counterpoint–a technique already habitually used between two violins (or other high instruments) in three-instrument sonatas, based on varying different structures. These works call for consummate vocal skills, combined with a high degree of sensitivity so that the audience empathises with the feelings and emotions expressed in the texts, with priority being given to theatrical techniques. It should not be forgotten that Steffani's music served as a model and reference for Händel's operas. Soprano Eugenia Boix and countertenor Carlos Mena will be performing, accompanied by Forma Antiqva, conducted by Aarón Zapico at the harpsichord.

GRAINDELAVOIX - FESTIVAL LLUMS D'ANTIGA

*MONESTIR DE SANT PAU

Thursday, 5/05/2022 19:00

Based in the Flemish city of Antwerp and conducted by its founder, Björn Schmelzer, Graindelavoix is, unarguably, one of the finest and most interesting vocal ensembles dedicated to polyphony. Its programme for the concert includes the eloquent testament Tenebrae Responsoria by Carlo Gesualdo, a genius in musical chiaroscuro and shade, melancholic sentiments, extreme chromatic effects, and striking dissonance. The enigmatic, sanguinary Prince of Venosa wrote the motets also known as Lliçons de tenebres (published in 1611) for the church services of the Holy Week's last three days (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday). The audience will also be able to enjoy the premier of Miserere mei Deus by Joan Magrané, a composer who has made polyphony one of the cornerstones and main hallmarks of his music.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, composed at the same time as his Ninth Symphony, is one of the composer’s most fascinating works and the culmination of his creative maturity. Rarely performed in public due to the difficulty of the score and the extensive resources required for its execution, it is a unique composition in the oeuvre of the genius from Bonn because of the synthesis of elements borrowed from both Renaissance madrigals and the classical tradition with innovations from the composer’s late musical period.

Carmen is all about a femme fatale, and the themes of love, envy, sensuality and death. The novel by Prosper Mérimée and, above all, the opera by Georges Bizet have immortalised these base passions in the form of art, encapsulating the essence of the most savage and unadulterated of feelings. Uruguayan composer José Serebrier adapted some of the best-known fragments of Bizet's Carmen for orchestra, like the legendary habanera “L'amour est une oiseau rebelle”, finishing with the brilliant finale from the “Danse bohème”, which opens the second act of the staged version of the opera.

Jordi Savall, Le Concert de Nations and Capella Reial de Catalunya present two of Mozart's major religious works and, indeed, two of the most important of all Western music. They are also two of his most enigmatic works, given the well-known mysterious fact that they were not completed. The Salzburg genius seems to have composed the Great Mass in C minor K 427 (417a) by choice (that is, it was not a commission) on the occasion of his wedding to Constanze Weber. It is a severe work, true to his maestros, Bach and Händel, with moments of sublime, angelical beauty so typical of Mozart's music, such as Et incarnatus est for solo soprano. The Requiem in D minor K 626 is quite another story and the legend that surrounds it, which you can take as far as your flights of fantasy permit, is well known to all.

Bruckner is the great symphonist of the last third of the 19th century. The spiritual and emotional depth of his music and the colossal magnitude of his symphonies are closely linked to his activity as an excellent improviser on the organ. It is from the timbral complexity of the so-called “king of instruments” that we can approach the overarching conception of Bruckner’s orchestra, a concept that provoked the contempt of the public and critics during the composer’s lifetime (only sincerely praised by Mahler and Wagner, staunch admirers and proponents of his work) and posthumous recognition throughout the 20th century.
